The Flannan
Isles (Na h-Eileanan Flannach) are
a group of small islands in the Atlantic70
miles 115 km north-west of the UK mainland and
22 miles 35 km beyond the Outer Hebrides. The islands were
visited and occasionally populated since the 8th century.
The lighthouse,
after a 5 year construction, was lit for the first time on 7 December 1899 and was continuously manned until it was automated in 1971.
The mysterious
disappearance of the three lighthouse keepers in December 1900 assures the
Isles their place in Scottish folklore. Wikipedia
As part of a
sightseeing trip we spent a fantastic 45 minutes circling around the
islands.
It was a bit hazy with high overcast but the sun broke
through a few times and the winds were calm.
